In rabbits, the two primary forms encountered are dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), where the heart chambers enlarge and the muscular walls become thin and weak, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), where the heart muscle thickens abnormally, reducing chamber size and cardiac filling. Both forms progressively compromise cardiac function and can lead to heart failure, significantly impacting quality of life and survival. While less commonly discussed than some other rabbit health conditions, cardiomyopathy represents an important cause of morbidity and mortality, particularly in older rabbits and certain susceptible populations.
The development of cardiomyopathy in rabbits involves changes to heart muscle structure and function that may be primary (arising from genetic or nutritional causes) or secondary (resulting from other diseases or toxic exposures). Dilated cardiomyopathy causes the heart to become enlarged and baggy, unable to contract forcefully enough to pump blood effectively. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy causes the heart walls, particularly the left ventricular wall, to thicken, making the chamber smaller and stiffer so it cannot fill properly between beats. Both conditions result in inadequate blood delivery to tissues and eventual heart failure if left untreated.
The impact of cardiomyopathy on rabbit health ranges from subtle exercise intolerance in early stages to life-threatening heart failure in advanced disease. Reduced cardiac output affects all organ systems, causing fatigue, weakness, and decreased vitality. Progressive heart failure causes fluid accumulation in the lungs (pulmonary edema) or body cavities, leading to breathing difficulty and abdominal distension. As prey animals, rabbits instinctively hide signs of illness, and cardiac disease may progress significantly before obvious symptoms alert owners to problems. Additionally, any illness causing discomfort or reduced appetite in rabbits risks triggering secondary gastrointestinal stasis, a potentially fatal complication requiring immediate attention.
Treatment for cardiomyopathy focuses on managing symptoms, slowing disease progression, and maintaining quality of life rather than achieving cure. Medical therapy can significantly improve comfort and extend functional lifespan when initiated appropriately. Early detection provides the best opportunity for effective management, though the rabbit's tendency to hide illness makes early diagnosis challenging.
