Gastrointestinal candidiasis disrupts normal digestive function and can contribute to diarrhea and malabsorption. Skin candidiasis causes irritation and discomfort in affected areas. In severely immunocompromised rabbits, systemic candidiasis can develop, affecting multiple organs and carrying a much more serious prognosis. Even localized infections cause discomfort and stress that compromise the rabbit's overall wellbeing. The connection between candidiasis and reduced food intake creates particular concern in rabbits, where maintaining continuous gut motility is essential for survival.
Treatment of candidiasis in rabbits requires appropriate antifungal therapy combined with identification and correction of underlying predisposing factors. Simply treating the yeast overgrowth without addressing why it occurred often leads to recurrence. Early detection improves outcomes, though recognizing candidiasis can be challenging because rabbits hide signs of illness and because symptoms may be subtle or attributed to other causes.
