Calcium excess, or hypercalcemia, in rabbits refers to elevated calcium levels in the body leading to deposition of calcium in tissues, most notably the urinary tract. Rabbits have unique calcium metabolism that makes them particularly susceptible to this condition. Unlike most mammals that regulate calcium absorption based on need, rabbits absorb dietary calcium very efficiently regardless of requirements and excrete excess calcium through the kidneys into the urine. The most common manifestation of calcium excess in rabbits is bladder sludge, a condition where calcium crystals accumulate in the bladder, forming a thick, pasty material. Untreated, this can progress to the formation of bladder stones (uroliths) or kidney stones. The irritation caused by this calcium-rich sludge leads to discomfort, straining to urinate, and increased risk of urinary tract infection. In severe cases, urinary obstruction can develop, creating a life-threatening emergency. Beyond the urinary tract, excessive calcium can deposit in soft tissues including kidneys and blood vessels, causing additional organ damage.
Calcium excess develops due to a combination of factors including high dietary calcium intake, inadequate water consumption leading to concentrated urine, sedentary lifestyle that reduces urine voiding frequency, and possibly genetic predisposition. Adult rabbits fed diets appropriate for growing rabbits, particularly those containing alfalfa hay or high-calcium pellets, commonly develop calcium excess over time. Rabbits that drink little water, whether due to preference, water taste, or inadequate access, concentrate their urine and accelerate calcium accumulation. Understanding these risk factors allows owners to take preventive measures.
Treatment of calcium excess involves dietary modification to reduce calcium intake, increasing hydration to dilute urine calcium concentration, encouraging exercise to promote regular urination, and sometimes medical intervention to address accumulated bladder sludge or stones. Mild cases often respond well to conservative management, while severe cases may require bladder flushing procedures or surgical removal of stones.
