Gastrointestinal stasis can develop secondary to pain from nail injuries if the rabbit stops eating, representing a potentially life-threatening complication of what would otherwise be a minor injury. Any condition causing reduced activity may lead to overgrown nails from decreased natural wear, increasing subsequent injury risk.

Conditions that might be confused with simple nail injuries include fractures of the toe bones, which may accompany severe nail avulsion or occur independently. Infections of the toe or foot not related to nail injury can cause similar limping and swelling. Abscesses in the foot can cause localized swelling and pain. Foreign bodies embedded in the foot cause acute lameness. Arthritis affecting foot joints produces chronic discomfort that might be attributed to nail problems. When the history does not clearly indicate nail catching followed by immediately apparent injury, veterinary examination helps distinguish these conditions.

Complications of nail injuries include infection developing at the injury site, particularly if contaminated or if the environment is not kept clean during healing. Osteomyelitis, bone infection, can develop from severe injuries or neglected infections. Chronic abnormal nail regrowth may follow injuries damaging the nail bed. Rarely, severe infections may require digit amputation if they do not respond to treatment. Secondary GI stasis from pain-related appetite reduction represents the most dangerous potential complication of an otherwise minor injury. Prompt first aid, appropriate veterinary care when indicated, and careful monitoring minimize complication risk.
