Bordetellosis is a bacterial respiratory infection in rabbits caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica, a gram-negative bacterium that affects the respiratory tract from the nasal passages to the lungs. This condition is an important component of the respiratory disease complex in rabbits and can occur as a primary infection or, more commonly, as a secondary invader that worsens disease caused by other pathogens, particularly Pasteurella multocida. Bordetella bronchiseptica is highly contagious and can spread rapidly through rabbit populations, making it a significant concern in multi-rabbit households, breeding facilities, and rescue environments.
The bacteria responsible for bordetellosis colonizes the respiratory epithelium, the cells lining the airways, where it damages the protective mechanisms that normally keep the respiratory tract clear of pathogens. Bordetella produces toxins that paralyze the ciliaâtiny hair-like structures that sweep mucus and debris out of the airwaysâand damage the cells themselves. This creates an environment favorable for bacterial multiplication and allows secondary bacterial infections to establish. Infection can occur through direct contact with infected animals, aerosol transmission of respiratory droplets, or contact with contaminated environments. Notably, Bordetella bronchiseptica can also infect dogs, cats, pigs, and guinea pigs, so cross-species transmission is possible in mixed-species households.
The impact of bordetellosis on rabbit health ranges from mild upper respiratory symptoms to severe, life-threatening pneumonia depending on the rabbit's immune status, concurrent infections, and treatment timing. Rabbits are obligate nasal breathers, meaning they breathe exclusively through their noses, which makes any respiratory disease particularly serious. Even relatively mild nasal congestion can cause significant distress and difficulty breathing in rabbits. Upper respiratory infections can prevent rabbits from properly detecting food odors, leading to decreased appetite and the secondary risk of GI stasis. When infection progresses to the lower respiratory tract causing pneumonia, the condition becomes life-threatening.
Treatment of bordetellosis requires prompt veterinary intervention with appropriate antibiotic therapy and supportive care. Early treatment typically results in good outcomes, but delayed or inadequate treatment can lead to chronic respiratory disease or fatal pneumonia. Because rabbits hide illness as prey animals, respiratory infections may be more advanced than they appear by the time symptoms become obvious to owners. Working with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian is essential, as antibiotic selection must account for the bacteria involved while avoiding medications that are dangerous to rabbits. With appropriate treatment, many rabbits recover fully from bordetellosis, though some may become chronic carriers capable of infecting other rabbits even after clinical recovery.
