Primary cardiomyopathy affects the heart directly rather than through arterial disease. Anemia from various causes reduces oxygen delivery and causes similar exercise intolerance. Obesity alone, independent of arterial disease, causes reduced activity and respiratory effort. Musculoskeletal conditions including arthritis or spondylosis cause reluctance to move. Neurological conditions may cause similar weakness or collapse. Cancer involving the heart or mediastinum produces cardiovascular symptoms. Potential complications from arterial disease include serious acute and chronic consequences. Chronic complications include progressive organ damage from reduced blood flow, heart failure from chronic increased cardiac workload, and general decline from inadequate tissue perfusion. Acute complications include stroke from cerebral artery occlusion, causing sudden neurological symptoms such as head tilt, paralysis, or collapse. Myocardial infarction (heart attack) can occur if coronary arteries are affected. Acute limb ischemia from peripheral arterial occlusion causes sudden limb weakness or coldness. Any acute event requires immediate emergency veterinary care. Secondary GI stasis from illness-related appetite reduction can become life-threatening and must be addressed urgently whenever a rabbit stops eating normally.
