Trichobezoars, or hairballs, can develop from ingested fur and may contribute to GI stasis, a life-threatening condition in rabbits. Skin damage from severe barbering can lead to wounds vulnerable to secondary bacterial infection. Self-trauma may progress in severity if underlying causes are not addressed. Behavioral escalation may occur, with barbering becoming more compulsive or other abnormal behaviors developing. In cases of social barbering, the victim rabbit experiences stress and potential injury, and the relationship between the rabbits may deteriorate if the underlying social dynamics are not addressed.
