Subcutaneous abscesses are localized collections of pus that form beneath the skin in rabbits, representing one of the most common and challenging medical conditions encountered in rabbit medicine. These painful, swollen masses develop when bacteria invade tissue, typically through wounds, dental disease, or other entry points, and the body walls off the infection by forming a thick capsule around the accumulating purulent material. Unlike abscesses in many other species, rabbit abscesses produce thick, caseous (cheese-like) pus that does not drain freely, making treatment considerably more difficult than in cats or dogs. Subcutaneous abscesses can occur anywhere on the body but are particularly common on the face and jaw due to their frequent association with dental disease.
The underlying causes of subcutaneous abscesses in rabbits typically involve bacterial infection, with Pasteurella multocida being the most commonly isolated organism, though Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pseudomonas, anaerobic bacteria, and mixed infections also occur. Bacteria gain entry through various routes: bite wounds from fights with other rabbits or animals, puncture wounds from hay or other sharp objects, progression of skin infections, extension from dental root infections or tooth root abscesses, and hematogenous spread from respiratory or other infections. The rabbit's immune system responds by encapsulating the bacteria and damaged tissue, creating the characteristic abscess structure, but this same encapsulation makes complete elimination of the infection challenging.
Subcutaneous abscesses significantly impact rabbit health and quality of life. The masses are often painful, causing discomfort and potentially affecting mobility or function depending on location. Facial abscesses may interfere with eating, particularly if associated with dental disease. Untreated abscesses can enlarge progressively, rupture and spread infection to surrounding tissues, or become chronic persistent problems. The systemic effects of fighting infection can cause weight loss, decreased appetite, and lethargy. Perhaps most importantly, the pain and stress from an untreated abscess can trigger gastrointestinal stasis, a potentially life-threatening secondary complication that must be prevented through adequate pain management and supportive care.
Treatment of subcutaneous abscesses in rabbits requires aggressive intervention, typically combining surgical debridement with prolonged antibiotic therapy. Simple lancing and drainage, which is often effective in other species, rarely provides lasting cure in rabbits due to the thick consistency of rabbit pus and the tendency for abscesses to recur if any infected tissue remains. Complete surgical excision of the abscess capsule, when anatomically possible, offers the best chance of cure. Working with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian experienced in abscess management is essential, as treatment protocols differ significantly from those used in other species, and rabbit-safe antibiotics must be selected to avoid potentially fatal dysbiosis.
