Vibriosis is a serious bacterial infection affecting marine crustaceans caused by various species of Vibrio bacteria, particularly Vibrio harveyi, Vibrio alginolyticus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and related species. These bacteria are ubiquitous in marine environments and opportunistically infect crustaceans when conditions favor bacterial proliferation or when host immune defenses are compromised. In aquarium settings, vibriosis represents one of the most significant infectious disease threats to marine crustaceans including shrimp, crabs, lobsters, and hermit crabs. The disease has also devastated commercial shrimp aquaculture operations worldwide, resulting in massive economic losses and driving extensive research into prevention and treatment.
Marine crustaceans commonly affected by vibriosis span all groups kept in saltwater aquariums and commercial culture systems. Ornamental shrimp including cleaner shrimp, peppermint shrimp, fire shrimp, and various caridean species are highly susceptible. Crabs including hermit crabs, emerald crabs, and decorator crabs can become infected. Larger crustaceans such as lobsters and mantis shrimp are also vulnerable. In aquaculture, penaeid shrimp species including Litopenaeus vannamei and Penaeus monodon have experienced catastrophic losses from vibriosis outbreaks. The bacteria do not discriminate based on crustacean size, age, or species, though stress factors and environmental conditions dramatically influence disease occurrence and severity.
The impact of vibriosis on affected crustaceans ranges from chronic subclinical infection to acute septicemia causing rapid death. Once Vibrio bacteria enter the hemolymph, they multiply rapidly, producing toxins and overwhelming the crustacean's limited immune responses. Organs including the hepatopancreas, gills, and muscle tissue are damaged, leading to systemic failure. In acute cases, death can occur within 24 to 48 hours of visible symptom onset. Chronic infections may persist for longer periods, gradually weakening the animal and making it susceptible to secondary complications. In populations, vibriosis can spread rapidly through water and direct contact, potentially causing significant mortality events if conditions favor bacterial proliferation.
Treatability of vibriosis in marine crustaceans presents significant challenges. Unlike fish, crustaceans cannot tolerate many antibiotics and other treatments commonly used for bacterial infections. Copper-based treatments are lethal to invertebrates, eliminating a class of antimicrobial agents. Many antibiotics are toxic to crustaceans at therapeutic doses or are ineffective against Vibrio species. Treatment therefore relies primarily on environmental optimization to support natural immune function, removal of stressors that predispose to infection, and in some cases, experimental approaches with limited validation. Prognosis for individual animals with acute vibriosis is generally poor, while chronic or early-stage infections may respond to supportive care. Prevention through excellent husbandry and stress minimization remains far more effective than treatment.
