This phenomenon represents one of the most significant challenges in maintaining mixed reef aquariums, as corals engage in territorial competition for space, light, and water flow. Understanding coral aggression is essential for any reef keeper who wishes to maintain a diverse collection of cnidarian species in close proximity without experiencing significant tissue loss or mortality among their specimens.
This condition affects virtually all coral species to varying degrees, though certain families demonstrate particularly aggressive tendencies. Large polyp stony corals such as Galaxea, Euphyllia, Fungia, and Hydnophora are notorious for their extensive sweeper tentacles that can extend many inches beyond their normal reach during nighttime hours. Soft corals like leather corals, mushrooms, and zoanthids engage in chemical warfare through allelopathy, releasing toxic compounds into the water that can inhibit growth or cause tissue necrosis in nearby stony corals. Anemones also participate in this competitive behavior and can devastate coral colonies they contact during their movements through the aquarium.
The impact on coral health can range from minor tissue recession to complete colony death depending on the intensity and duration of the aggressive interaction. Repeated stinging causes cumulative damage that weakens the victim coral's immune response, making it susceptible to secondary bacterial or fungal infections. The stress of ongoing territorial disputes diverts energy from growth and reproduction toward tissue repair, resulting in stunted development and reduced coloration. In severe cases, particularly involving chemical warfare from soft corals, entire sections of a reef aquarium can experience simultaneous decline as toxic compounds accumulate in the water column.
Treatability of coral aggression issues is generally good when keepers understand the mechanisms involved and take appropriate preventive and corrective measures. The primary approach involves proper planning of coral placement with adequate spacing between incompatible species, understanding that corals grow over time and spacing requirements increase accordingly. Physical barriers, strategic positioning of less aggressive species, and maintaining excellent water quality to dilute allelopathic compounds all contribute to successful management. While some tissue damage from stinging encounters can heal completely with proper care, prevention through thoughtful aquascaping and species selection remains far more effective than treating damage after it occurs.
