Fungal infections in scorpions, collectively termed mycosis, represent serious opportunistic diseases that exploit weaknesses in the scorpion's natural defenses. These infections can affect external surfaces of the exoskeleton, invade the respiratory system through the book lungs, or become systemic infections spreading throughout the body cavity. Fungi are ubiquitous in the environment, present in soil, air, and on virtually all organic surfaces. Under normal circumstances, a healthy scorpion's intact exoskeleton and robust immune function prevent fungal colonization. However, when defenses are compromised or environmental conditions overwhelmingly favor fungal growth, infections can establish and progress to life-threatening severity.
Scorpions across all taxonomic families are susceptible to fungal infection, though species requiring high humidity environments face elevated risk because the conditions they need to thrive also favor fungal proliferation. Tropical forest scorpions, cave-dwelling species, and other humidity-dependent taxa must be maintained in environments that inherently support fungal growth, making careful balance between humidity and ventilation essential. Desert-adapted species kept too humid by well-meaning keepers face fungal infection risk from inappropriate conditions. Any scorpion can develop mycosis following injury, during post-molt vulnerability, or when immunocompromised by stress, malnutrition, or concurrent illness.
The impact of fungal infection on scorpion health varies based on infection location and extent. External infections affecting only the outer exoskeleton surface may cause minimal direct harm but indicate conditions requiring correction. Infections that penetrate the exoskeleton or establish in wounds can spread to internal tissues with serious consequences. Book lung infections compromise respiratory function, leading to systemic effects from impaired oxygen exchange. Systemic mycosis, where fungi spread throughout the hemolymph and internal organs, is typically fatal regardless of treatment attempts. Even survivable infections can cause permanent damage and increased vulnerability to recurrence.
Treatability of fungal infections depends heavily on how early the infection is detected and how far it has progressed. Superficial external infections caught early may respond to environmental correction and topical antifungal treatment. Infections that have penetrated the cuticle or established internally face much poorer prognoses. No antifungal medications are specifically formulated or tested for scorpion use, and dosing remains largely guesswork extrapolated from other species. Systemic antifungal treatment carries significant risk of toxicity. Prevention through appropriate husbandry remains far more effective than attempting to treat established infections.
