Red bugs, scientifically known as Tegastes acroporanus, represent one of the most common and persistent parasitic pests affecting Acropora and other small polyp stony corals in marine aquarium systems. These tiny copepods measure approximately 0.5 millimeters in length and appear as small red or yellow-orange specks moving across coral tissue surfaces. Despite their diminutive size, red bug infestations can cause significant stress and health decline in affected coral colonies when populations reach substantial levels. The condition has become increasingly recognized as a significant threat to SPS coral health in both home aquariums and commercial coral propagation facilities.
Red bugs demonstrate strong host specificity, predominantly affecting corals within the Acropora genus though occasional infestations occur on other SPS species. The parasites show particular affinity for certain Acropora species while largely ignoring others, with Acropora valida, Acropora millepora, and Acropora tortuosa among the most commonly affected hosts. Other SPS corals including some Montipora and Pocillopora species may occasionally harbor these copepods, though infestations on non-Acropora hosts tend to be less severe. The specificity of red bugs for Acropora corals means that mixed reef systems may show infestation on some colonies while others remain completely unaffected.
The impact of red bug infestations on coral health ranges from subtle to significant depending on population density and host coral vigor. Light infestations may cause minimal observable effects, with corals continuing to grow and display normal coloration. Moderate to heavy infestations typically result in reduced polyp extension, color fading, and slowed growth rates as the coral expends energy responding to parasitic stress. Severely affected colonies may display significantly muted coloration, chronic polyp retraction, and tissue thinning that compromises long-term survival. The cumulative stress from chronic infestation can predispose corals to secondary infections and other health problems.
Treatability of red bug infestations is generally good when appropriate treatment protocols are followed correctly. The standard treatment involves controlled exposure to medications containing milbemycin oxime, with commercial dog heartworm preventatives being the most commonly used source. Treatment protocols have been refined through years of hobbyist experience and typically achieve complete eradication when properly executed. The primary challenge lies in preventing reinfestation from untreated corals or new additions that may carry the parasites. With proper quarantine procedures and comprehensive treatment of all susceptible corals, long-term freedom from red bugs is achievable.
