Fungal infections represent a significant category of health concerns for captive phasmids, encompassing a range of pathogenic and opportunistic fungi that can colonize the exoskeleton, penetrate into internal tissues, or compromise respiratory function. Unlike the highly specialized entomopathogenic fungi that have evolved specifically to parasitize insects, general fungal infections in phasmids may involve various environmental fungi that become pathogenic under favorable conditions. These infections range from superficial cuticular colonization that may cause minimal harm to severe systemic infections that prove fatal. Understanding the spectrum of fungal disease helps keepers recognize problems early and implement appropriate management strategies.
Phasmids are exposed to fungal spores constantly in their captive environments, as fungi are ubiquitous organisms present in soil, plant material, and air. Under normal circumstances, the intact insect cuticle provides an effective barrier against fungal invasion, and the insect's immune system can deal with minor challenges. However, when environmental conditions strongly favor fungal growth, when the cuticle is compromised, or when the insect's immune function is suppressed by stress, opportunistic fungi can establish infections. The warm, humid conditions that many phasmid species require for successful molting also create ideal environments for fungal proliferation, creating a fundamental management challenge.
The impact of fungal infection on phasmid health depends greatly on the type of fungus involved, the extent and location of infection, and the host's overall condition. Superficial infections limited to the outer cuticle may cause cosmetic changes but minimal functional impairment, and such infections may even resolve if environmental conditions become less favorable for the fungus. Infections that penetrate to deeper tissues, compromise respiratory openings, or become systemic carry much worse prognoses. Secondary effects of fungal infection include stress-related immune suppression, reduced feeding, and interference with normal behaviors including molting.
Treatability of fungal infections in phasmids is limited but somewhat more hopeful than for specialized entomopathogenic fungi. Environmental modification to reduce humidity and improve ventilation can halt progression of some infections. Early-stage superficial infections may respond to careful removal or drying. However, no proven effective antifungal medications exist for invertebrate use, and once infections become established internally, options are extremely limited. As with most invertebrate health conditions, prevention through proper husbandry remains far more effective than treatment of established disease.
