While wild populations may occasionally experience similar conditions, the concentrated stress factors present in captive environments appear to increase incidence rates. As muscle tissue dies, shrimp progressively lose the ability to swim, walk, grasp food, and maintain normal positioning. Once muscle tissue has died and turned white, it cannot regenerate or recover its normal function in invertebrates. However, very early intervention when only minimal whiteness is visible, combined with aggressive environmental optimization, occasionally allows shrimp to survive with limited permanent damage.
