When a spider becomes trapped in its molt, circulation becomes compromised, tissues begin to desiccate or become damaged, and the animal may suffocate if book lungs cannot expand properly within the new exoskeleton. Even survivors of difficult molts may emerge with permanent deformities, missing limbs, or compromised organ function that affects their quality of life and longevity. Treatability of molt death syndrome is extremely limited once the condition manifests, making prevention the cornerstone of management. While some emergency interventions exist, such as carefully increasing humidity or gently assisting with exoskeleton removal, these measures carry significant risks and frequently prove unsuccessful. Prognosis depends heavily on how early complications are detected, the overall health of the specimen prior to molting, and the specific nature of the molt failure.
