Hairworms, scientifically classified within the phylum Nematomorpha, represent one of the most devastating parasitic infections that can afflict praying mantises and other predatory insects. These remarkable parasites, also known as horsehair worms or Gordian worms, develop inside their mantid hosts over extended periods, consuming internal tissues and dramatically altering the host's behavior before eventually emerging to complete their aquatic reproductive cycle. The infection is almost universally fatal for the mantis host, as the parasite grows to occupy a significant portion of the internal body cavity.
Praying mantises become infected with hairworms through their predatory feeding behavior, specifically when consuming intermediate hosts that harbor the larval stage of the parasite. Common intermediate hosts include crickets, grasshoppers, and other orthopteran insects that have ingested hairworm cysts while drinking from contaminated water sources. Wild-caught mantises and those fed wild-caught feeder insects face the highest risk of harboring these parasites, though the infection may remain undetected for weeks or months as the worm develops internally.
The impact of hairworm infection on mantis health is profound and ultimately catastrophic. As the parasite matures within the host's body cavity, it displaces and consumes vital organs, including portions of the digestive and reproductive systems. The developing worm can grow remarkably long, sometimes exceeding the body length of the mantis itself, coiling extensively within the limited internal space. This massive parasitic burden progressively weakens the host while the worm simultaneously manipulates the mantis's behavior to facilitate its own life cycle completion.
Unfortunately, there is no known effective treatment for hairworm infection in mantises. By the time symptoms become apparent, the parasite has typically developed to a stage where removal would be impossible without killing the host. Prevention through careful selection of captive-bred mantises and commercially raised feeder insects remains the only reliable strategy for avoiding this devastating parasitic condition. Keepers who observe a hairworm emerging from their mantis should understand that the host rarely survives this process, and euthanasia may be the most humane option if the mantis is suffering.
