These opportunistic pathogens are commonly present in aquarium environments and typically infect shrimp whose immune systems have been compromised by stress, injury, poor water quality, or other primary health conditions. Understanding fungal infections is complicated by the frequent misidentification of other conditions as fungalânotably the parasitic dinoflagellate Ellobiopsidae, which appears as fuzzy green growths but is not actually a fungus, yet is commonly discussed alongside true fungal infections due to similar presentation.
True fungal infections can affect all freshwater shrimp species kept in aquariums, with susceptibility varying based on environmental conditions and individual health status rather than species-specific vulnerability. Neocaridina davidi varieties, Caridina cantonensis types, Amano shrimp, ghost shrimp, and other commonly kept species all develop fungal infections under appropriate conditions. Species kept in suboptimal conditions or subjected to chronic stress show higher infection rates than those maintained in ideal environments. Recently shipped shrimp, those recovering from molting difficulties, and individuals with exoskeleton damage from any cause represent particularly vulnerable populations.
The impact of fungal infections on shrimp health ranges from minor cosmetic issues to rapidly fatal systemic disease, depending on the fungal species involved, the location and extent of infection, and the overall health of the affected shrimp. Superficial infections limited to the exoskeleton surface may cause minimal harm and may even clear following a successful molt. Internal fungal infections, gill colonization, or widespread systemic involvement carry grave prognoses. Egg infections in berried females can destroy developing clutches and may spread to the female's tissues. The progressive nature of most fungal infections means that early intervention offers better outcomes than delayed treatment.
Treatability of fungal infections in freshwater shrimp is limited by several factors. Most antifungal medications effective in treating fish are unsafe for invertebrates due to copper content or other toxic ingredients. Safe treatment options that exist are often of uncertain efficacy in shrimp specifically, with most evidence being anecdotal rather than scientifically validated. Prevention through proper husbandry, stress reduction, and maintenance of water quality is far more effective than attempting to cure established infections. Early-stage superficial infections have the best treatment prospects, while advanced or internal infections are frequently untreatable.
