The universal vulnerability stems from fundamental gastropod biologyâtheir moist, permeable skin readily absorbs substances from their environment, and their mucus production concentrates contaminants at the body surface. Snails lack the metabolic pathways that allow many vertebrates to detoxify and excrete harmful substances, meaning even sub-lethal exposures can cause progressive damage.
The impact of chemical exposure ranges from mild irritation and temporary distress to rapid death depending on the substance involved, concentration, and duration of exposure.
