Black death, more formally known as bacterial septicemia, is a devastating systemic bacterial infection that affects praying mantises and represents one of the most serious health threats facing captive mantids. The condition derives its common name from the characteristic black or dark discoloration that develops in affected individuals as the infection spreads through their hemolymph, the invertebrate equivalent of blood. Once established, the bacterial infection overwhelms the mantis's limited immune defenses and spreads rapidly throughout the body, causing widespread tissue damage and almost invariably resulting in death if not somehow arrested in its earliest stages.
This condition affects mantises of all species commonly kept in captivity, from small species like the European mantis to large tropical species like the Orchid mantis and Giant Asian mantis. No mantis species appears to possess natural resistance to bacterial septicemia once the pathogens gain access to the hemolymph. Both nymphs and adults are susceptible, though nymphs often face higher mortality rates due to their smaller size and less developed immune responses. The condition has been reported in wild mantis populations but appears more common in captive settings where stress factors and transmission opportunities may be elevated.
The impact of black death on affected mantises is profound and typically fatal. The systemic nature of the infection means that bacteria and their toxic byproducts affect every tissue and organ in the mantis's body simultaneously. Normal physiological functions break down as the infection progresses. Affected mantises experience rapid decline over a period of hours to days, with death the most common outcome. Even in the rare cases where mantises appear to recover, the systemic damage may result in shortened lifespan or compromised function. For keepers, black death is one of the most distressing conditions to encounter due to its rapid progression and poor prognosis.
Treatability of black death is extremely limited due to the systemic nature of the infection and the lack of established antibiotic protocols for mantises. Unlike vertebrates where bacterial infections are routinely treated with antibiotics, invertebrate medicine has not developed standardized treatments for septicemia. Some keepers report anecdotal success with various interventions, but no approach has demonstrated reliable efficacy. The primary focus in dealing with black death must therefore be prevention through optimal husbandry, stress reduction, and careful attention to hygiene and food quality. Once the condition develops, supportive care may prolong life briefly but rarely produces recovery.
