Abdomen rupture, medically referred to as opisthosoma rupture, represents one of the most severe and frequently fatal injuries encountered in captive tarantulas and spiders. The opisthosoma is the posterior body section containing vital organs including the heart, book lungs, digestive system, reproductive organs, and silk glands, all encased within a relatively thin and flexible exoskeleton. Unlike the hardened prosoma (cephalothorax), the abdominal exoskeleton is designed for flexibility to accommodate feeding expansion and egg development, making it inherently more vulnerable to traumatic injury. When rupture occurs, the structural breach allows hemolymph (invertebrate blood) to leak externally while exposing internal organs to contamination and desiccation.
This devastating injury affects tarantulas and spiders across all families and species, though heavy-bodied terrestrial tarantulas face the highest risk due to their substantial mass combined with their tendency to climb despite lacking the proportional leg strength and adhesive capability of lighter arboreal species. Genera such as Brachypelma, Grammostola, Aphonopelma, and Theraphosa contain many species particularly prone to fall-related abdominal rupture. However, arboreal species can also suffer rupture from falls if they lose grip or are dropped during handling, and even smaller true spiders may experience this injury under sufficient traumatic force.
The impact of opisthosoma rupture on the affected spider is immediate and severe. Hemolymph loss begins instantly upon breach, and given that spiders possess an open circulatory system, significant fluid loss occurs rapidly. The exposed internal tissues begin desiccating within minutes if not protected, while bacterial contamination poses substantial infection risk. Spiders cannot actively close wounds as vertebrates do through clotting and muscle contraction; instead, hemolymph coagulates slowly, and any continued movement or manipulation disrupts the fragile clot formation. The spider experiences immediate physiological crisis including potential respiratory compromise if book lungs are affected.
Prognosis for abdomen rupture depends heavily on rupture size, location, speed of intervention, and overall spider health, but remains guarded to grave in most cases. Small peripheral ruptures in otherwise healthy specimens occasionally survive with immediate appropriate intervention, though permanent scarring and weakness result. Moderate to large ruptures carry very high mortality rates despite intervention. Many keepers and veterinarians consider extensive opisthosoma rupture to be an indication for humane euthanasia rather than prolonged suffering through futile treatment attempts. Prevention through proper husbandry represents by far the most effective approach to this condition.
