Vitamin D toxicity, also known as hypervitaminosis D, is a serious metabolic condition in horses that occurs when excessive amounts of vitamin D accumulate in the body. This fat-soluble vitamin is essential for calcium and phosphorus metabolism, bone health, and immune function, but when present in toxic quantities, it causes widespread and potentially irreversible damage to soft tissues throughout the body. Unlike water-soluble vitamins that are readily excreted, vitamin D is stored in fat tissue and the liver, making accumulation and toxicity a significant concern when horses receive inappropriate supplementation or accidentally ingest toxic plants.
This condition is relatively uncommon in horses under normal management circumstances, as most horses obtain adequate vitamin D through sunlight exposure and standard feeds. However, vitamin D toxicity can occur in horses receiving multiple supplements containing vitamin D, those given injectable vitamin D preparations inappropriately, or horses that consume plants containing vitamin D-like compounds such as day-blooming jessamine, wild jasmine, or certain species of Solanum. The condition affects horses of all breeds and ages, though horses kept primarily indoors or those with owners who over-supplement are at increased risk.
The impact of vitamin D toxicity on equine health is profound and multisystemic. Excessive vitamin D causes hypercalcemia, which leads to calcium deposition in soft tissues including blood vessel walls, heart muscle, kidneys, lungs, and tendons. This soft tissue calcification, known as calcinosis, progressively impairs organ function and can lead to cardiovascular compromise, kidney failure, and respiratory difficulties. The cardiovascular effects are particularly concerning, as calcification of arterial walls leads to reduced vessel elasticity and impaired blood flow.
Early detection and treatment of vitamin D toxicity significantly improve outcomes, though some damage may be irreversible once soft tissue calcification has occurred. Treatment focuses on eliminating the source of excess vitamin D, managing hypercalcemia, and providing supportive care to maintain kidney function and cardiovascular health. Horse owners should be aware that more is not always better with supplementation, and vitamin D should only be given under veterinary guidance when a specific deficiency has been documented.
