This ligament, also known as the radial check ligament or proximal check ligament, functions to limit excessive stretch of the superficial digital flexor tendon during weight bearing, particularly during the stance phase when the fetlock joint descends under load. When damaged through strain or trauma, the resulting condition produces lameness and swelling in the proximal palmar metacarpal region that requires careful diagnostic evaluation and extended rehabilitation.
This condition affects performance horses across various disciplines, with particular prevalence in horses engaged in jumping, dressage, racing, and other demanding athletic activities. The superior check ligament experiences significant mechanical loading whenever the superficial digital flexor tendon is under tension, which occurs throughout normal locomotion and intensifies dramatically during athletic performance. Forelimb involvement predominates due to the greater weight-bearing demands placed on the front limbs during movement. Sport horses performing collected work and jumping may be particularly susceptible due to the specific loading patterns these activities impose.
The impact of superior check ligament desmitis on equine health and performance extends beyond the immediate lameness to affect the entire flexor apparatus function. When this ligament is damaged, its protective role for the superficial digital flexor tendon is compromised, potentially increasing SDFT vulnerability to injury if the horse continues working.
