Sand colic, also known as sand impaction, represents a form of obstructive colic caused by accumulation of sand and soil particles within the horse's gastrointestinal tract, primarily the large intestine. Horses naturally ingest small amounts of soil during normal grazing, which typically passes through the digestive system without problems. However, horses maintained on sandy pastures, fed on sandy ground, or those with behavioral tendencies to consume soil can accumulate significant quantities of sand in the cecum and large colon. This accumulated material settles in the ventral portions of these large intestinal compartments due to its weight, causing irritation, inflammation, and potentially life-threatening obstruction.
Sand colic affects horses in regions where sandy soil predominates, with prevalence varying dramatically based on geographic location and management practices. Coastal areas, desert regions, and areas with sandy or light soil compositions report the highest incidence. Horses maintained on overgrazed pastures where grass coverage is sparse face elevated risk, as they consume more soil while searching for forage. Those fed hay directly on the ground in sandy paddocks or stalls with sandy floors accumulate sand with each meal. The condition occurs year-round but may peak during dry seasons when pasture grass is short and ground exposure increases during feeding.
The impact of sand colic on equine health ranges from chronic low-grade discomfort to acute life-threatening obstruction requiring emergency surgery. Horses with mild to moderate sand accumulation may show vague, intermittent signs of abdominal discomfort, poor body condition, and diarrhea that persist for weeks or months. Severe accumulation causes acute obstructive colic with intense pain, intestinal distension, and risk of intestinal displacement or rupture. Chronic sand irritation damages the intestinal mucosa, impairing nutrient absorption and causing protein loss. Without appropriate management, affected horses experience progressive deterioration and are at risk for complications including intestinal rupture and death.
Early detection and appropriate treatment can resolve sand colic in many cases, while prevention through proper management remains the most effective approach. Regular monitoring for sand accumulation allows identification of horses with developing problems before severe impaction occurs. Medical treatment with laxatives and sand-clearing products successfully removes sand in many cases. Severe impactions may require surgical intervention. Prevention strategies focusing on feeding management, pasture improvement, and prophylactic sand clearance protect horses in high-risk environments and should be implemented proactively for horses living in sandy regions.
