Right dorsal colitis is a serious inflammatory condition of the equine large intestine that occurs as a consequence of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug toxicity. This condition specifically affects the right dorsal colon, causing ulceration, protein loss, and potentially life-threatening complications. The condition represents one of the most significant adverse effects of NSAID use in horses and has become increasingly recognized as a cause of chronic weight loss, diarrhea, and colic in horses receiving these commonly prescribed medications.
The prevalence of right dorsal colitis has increased with the widespread use of NSAIDs in equine practice, particularly phenylbutazone and flunixin meglumine. Performance horses, racehorses, and any horse receiving prolonged or high-dose NSAID therapy are at elevated risk. The condition can develop with appropriate-dose therapy, though the risk increases substantially with overdosing, prolonged treatment duration, dehydration, or concurrent administration of multiple NSAID products. Even horses receiving standard therapeutic doses may develop the condition if other risk factors are present.
The impact of right dorsal colitis on equine health is substantial, affecting the horse's ability to absorb nutrients and maintain protein homeostasis. The inflamed and ulcerated colonic mucosa loses its normal barrier function, resulting in protein-losing enteropathy characterized by low blood protein levels, weight loss, and ventral edema. The condition causes varying degrees of colic, from mild recurrent episodes to severe unrelenting pain. Horses may become debilitated and lose significant body condition, particularly if the condition is not recognized and treated promptly.
Early detection and intervention dramatically improve outcomes for horses with right dorsal colitis. When recognized promptly and treated with dietary modification, appropriate medical therapy, and elimination of NSAID use, many horses can recover fully. However, severe cases with extensive ulceration may require prolonged treatment periods, and some horses develop permanent damage to the colonic wall that predisposes to recurrence or chronic gastrointestinal dysfunction. Prevention through judicious NSAID use remains the most effective approach to this condition.
