This condition primarily affects weanlings and young horses under two years of age, causing thickening of the small intestinal wall that impairs nutrient absorption and leads to protein loss. The disease results in significant weight loss, failure to thrive, and potentially life-threatening hypoproteinemia if not recognized and treated promptly.
