Orchitis can occur in stallions of any age and any breed, though actively breeding stallions face increased exposure risk to infectious agents. The condition is encountered with moderate frequency in equine practice, representing an important differential diagnosis for any stallion presenting with scrotal swelling, pain, or declining semen quality. While precise prevalence data are limited, orchitis is well-recognized by reproduction specialists as a significant cause of acquired infertility in breeding stallions. Early recognition and aggressive treatment are essential for preserving fertility, as the window for preventing permanent damage may be narrow.
The impact of orchitis on stallion health extends beyond local testicular effects to include significant pain, systemic illness in severe cases, and potentially career-ending consequences for breeding animals. Acutely affected stallions may show obvious distress, refusing to breed or allow scrotal examination. Even when clinical signs resolve, the inflammatory damage to seminiferous epithelium often results in permanent subfertility or sterility of the affected testicle.
