The condition occurs sporadically throughout the year, with potential seasonal increases corresponding to fly activity, dusty conditions, or situations increasing risk of ocular trauma. The impact of orbital cellulitis on equine health can be devastating without appropriate intervention, as infection within the confined orbital space causes pressure on the eye and optic nerve while potentially spreading to involve sinuses, brain, and systemic circulation. Proptosis, or forward displacement of the eye, develops as inflammatory swelling accumulates in the limited orbital space, stretching the optic nerve and compromising blood supply to intraocular structures.
