The cardiac glycosides cause profound disturbances in heart rhythm that can rapidly progress to fatal arrhythmias. Unlike some toxic plants that must be consumed in large quantities to cause harm, oleander is toxic in remarkably small amounts, with ingestion of as few as 20 to 40 leaves potentially being fatal to an adult horse. The combination of the plant's extreme toxicity, attractive appearance, widespread ornamental use, and the rapid progression of symptoms makes oleander one of the most dangerous plants that horses may encounter.
Early recognition and immediate emergency veterinary treatment are absolutely critical for survival. The window between symptom onset and potentially fatal cardiac arrest can be very short, sometimes only a few hours. Horse owners in areas where oleander is present must be able to identify the plant, understand its extreme danger, and know to seek emergency veterinary care immediately if exposure is suspected. Prevention through elimination of oleander from all areas accessible to horses and careful verification that no oleander is present in new environments are essential management practices. The severity of oleander toxicity cannot be overstated, and awareness of this toxic plant should be a priority for all horse owners in affected regions.
