Mastitis is an inflammatory condition of the mammary gland in mares, most commonly caused by bacterial infection that leads to swelling, pain, and altered milk production. The condition occurs primarily in lactating mares and those in the periparturient period, though it can occasionally develop in non-lactating mares following trauma or other predisposing conditions. Mastitis represents one of the more common mammary disorders encountered in equine practice, with potential consequences ranging from temporary discomfort and reduced nursing efficiency to permanent mammary damage and systemic illness in severe cases.
Mastitis affects mares across all breeds and types, with lactating individuals at highest risk. The condition most frequently develops during peak lactation when milk production is greatest and nursing trauma to the teats is common. The weaning period represents another high-risk time, as abrupt cessation of nursing leads to mammary engorgement and potential bacterial colonization. Foal loss or early weaning creates similar conditions of milk stasis that predispose to infection. While accurate incidence figures are not well established, mastitis is a familiar problem to experienced broodmare managers and equine practitioners.
The impact of mastitis on mare health and foal nutrition varies with severity. Mild cases may cause only localized discomfort and temporary changes in milk character, while the mare continues to nurse successfully with appropriate treatment. Moderate cases cause significant pain that may interfere with nursing and require separation of mare and foal. Severe or gangrenous mastitis can result in systemic illness, permanent mammary destruction, and in rare instances, death. Foals of affected mares may experience nutritional deprivation if nursing is interrupted and require supplemental feeding.
Early detection and prompt treatment of mastitis produce favorable outcomes in most cases. Recognition of the early signs including warmth, swelling, and discomfort of the udder enables intervention before the infection becomes established or spreads. Appropriate antimicrobial therapy selected based on culture and sensitivity testing eliminates the causative organisms in the majority of cases. Understanding risk factors and implementing preventive management practices reduces mastitis incidence in broodmare operations. With proper care, most mares recover fully and continue to nurse their current foals or produce normally in subsequent lactations.
