The condition is considerably more common and clinically significant in male horses, particularly geldings, due to their longer, narrower urethra that is more susceptible to obstruction by passing stones. Mares can develop bladder stones but rarely experience the life-threatening complete obstruction seen in males because their shorter, wider urethra allows easier passage of smaller stones.
