Infundibular caries is a degenerative dental condition affecting the upper cheek teeth of horses, characterized by decay of the cementum filling within the infundibula. The infundibula are funnel-shaped invaginations on the occlusal (chewing) surface of equine maxillary premolars and molars that normally contain cementum, a specialized calcified tissue. When this cementum becomes defective, fails to fully develop, or begins to decay, the resulting cavities create sites for food accumulation, bacterial proliferation, and progressive tooth destruction.
