The medial canthus represents the most commonly affected periocular site due to its moist environment from tear accumulation, though any periocular tissue can be affected when larvae are deposited by feeding flies.
The impact of periocular habronemiasis on equine health ranges from mild localized irritation to severe, disfiguring granulomatous masses that threaten vision and eyelid function. The intense inflammatory response to larval presence creates tissue destruction and granuloma formation that progressively enlarges without treatment.
