Migrating abscesses affect horses of all breeds, ages, and disciplines, making this one of the most common causes of sudden, severe lameness in equines. Any horse can develop a gravel, though those with poor hoof quality, white line disease, previous injuries, or environmental exposure to wet and muddy conditions face increased risk. The condition occurs year-round but may be more prevalent during wet seasons when hooves are softened and more vulnerable to bacterial invasion.
