The condition is caused by various species of mites that establish residence in the external ear canal and inner surface of the ear pinna, feeding on tissue fluids, debris, and skin cells. In horses, the most commonly implicated organisms include Psoroptes cuniculi (also known as Psoroptes equi when found in horses), though other mite species may occasionally be involved. These microscopic parasites complete their entire life cycle within the ear environment, leading to persistent infestation if untreated.
The prevalence of ear mites in the general horse population is low compared to other domestic species, leading to the condition sometimes being overlooked in differential diagnosis of ear problems. However, in certain populations and management situations, infestation rates may be higher than generally appreciated. Horses housed with or near other species more commonly affected by ear mites, such as rabbits or goats, may have increased exposure risk. Horses in crowded conditions or those sharing equipment have more opportunities for mite transmission. Geographic and regional variations in prevalence exist, with some areas reporting higher incidence than others.
The impact of ear mites on affected horses ranges from mild irritation to significant distress depending on the severity of infestation and individual sensitivity. Mites feeding and moving within the ear cause intense itching that leads to head shaking, ear rubbing, and progressive sensitivity to ear handling. The mechanical irritation and feeding activity of mites triggers inflammatory responses that can result in accumulation of dark, crusty debris in the ear canal. Heavy infestations may cause substantial discomfort affecting the horse's demeanor, willingness to work, and tolerance for bridling. Secondary bacterial or fungal infections may complicate mite infestations.
The positive aspect of ear mite diagnosis is that the condition is highly treatable, with most infestations responding well to appropriate antiparasitic therapy. Treatment options include topical preparations applied directly to the ears and systemic medications that reach mites through the bloodstream. With correct diagnosis and adequate treatment, including attention to environmental decontamination and treatment of contact animals, complete resolution is typically achieved. Understanding that ear mites are contagious and can spread between animals is important for preventing reinfestation and protecting other horses in the facility.
