The condition is closely associated with bone spavin (osteoarthritis of the distal tarsal joints), and in many cases represents a component of or contributor to the bone spavin complex rather than an isolated entity. Horses with conformational variations that increase stress on the medial hock, such as sickle hocks or cow-hocked conformation, face elevated risk of developing cunean bursitis and associated conditions.
Unlike superficial bursitis conditions that primarily create cosmetic blemishes, cunean bursitis typically causes functional impairment through pain-induced lameness. The intimate relationship between the cunean bursa and the underlying tarsal joints means that bursal inflammation often reflects or contributes to deeper joint pathology.
