Cannon keratosis is a chronic skin condition affecting the front surface of the cannon bones in horses, characterized by the accumulation of thick, waxy, or scaly sebaceous material. This condition, sometimes colloquially referred to as stud crud due to its frequent occurrence in stallions, presents as raised, crusty patches of hyperkeratotic skin that can range from mild cosmetic concerns to more significant dermatological issues requiring ongoing management. The condition primarily affects the anterior aspect of the cannon bones on both front and hind legs, though it may be more pronounced on certain limbs depending on the individual horse.
Cannon keratosis occurs across all horse breeds and types, though certain populations appear more susceptible than others. Thoroughbreds, Warmbloods, and other breeds with finer, thinner skin seem to develop this condition more frequently, while draft breeds with thicker skin and heavier feathering may be relatively protected. The condition affects horses of all ages but is particularly common in mature stallions, leading to its alternative name. Both mares and geldings can develop cannon keratosis, though the prevalence appears somewhat lower than in intact males.
While cannon keratosis is generally considered a cosmetic issue rather than a serious health threat, it can impact the appearance of show horses and may cause mild discomfort if the accumulated material becomes thick enough to crack or if secondary infections develop. In performance horses where appearance matters for competition, cannon keratosis can be a source of frustration for owners and handlers who must maintain a clean, healthy-looking coat. The condition may also attract debris and insects, potentially leading to irritation or complications if left completely unmanaged.
The good news for horse owners is that cannon keratosis is highly manageable with appropriate care and attention. While complete cure may not be possible in horses with genetic predisposition, regular grooming, topical treatments, and environmental management can keep the condition under control and minimize its appearance.
