This condition occurs when bacteria enter the bloodstream and colonize the heart tissue, forming vegetative growths composed of bacteria, fibrin, platelets, and inflammatory cells on the valve surfaces. These vegetations can interfere with normal valve function, leading to regurgitation or stenosis, and can also serve as a source of septic emboli that may travel to other organs throughout the body.
Bacterial endocarditis is relatively uncommon in horses compared to some other species, but it remains a significant concern due to its serious consequences and challenging treatment requirements. The condition can affect horses of any age, breed, or discipline, though it is more frequently diagnosed in horses with pre-existing cardiac abnormalities, chronic infections, or immunocompromising conditions.
