Anthrax is an acute, highly fatal infectious disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis, affecting horses and other domestic and wild herbivores as well as humans. This ancient disease has been recognized for millennia and remains a significant concern in endemic regions worldwide due to the extreme durability of its spores in soil. Horses acquire infection primarily through ingesting spores while grazing contaminated pastures, though skin wounds and insect bites can also serve as entry points. Once infection is established, the disease progresses rapidly, often causing death within 24 to 72 hours of the first clinical signs.
Anthrax occurs worldwide but is endemic in specific regions where soil conditions favor spore persistence, including parts of the southern and midwestern United States, South America, Africa, Asia, southern Europe, and Australia. In endemic areas, cases tend to occur sporadically or in small outbreaks following environmental conditions that expose spores, such as flooding, drought, or soil disturbance. Horses grazing in areas with a history of anthrax outbreaks or where livestock burial sites exist face the highest risk. The disease does not spread directly from horse to horse under normal circumstances.
The impact of anthrax on affected horses is devastating, with mortality rates approaching 80 to 90 percent or higher in untreated cases. The bacteria produce potent toxins that cause massive tissue destruction, systemic shock, and multi-organ failure. Death often occurs so rapidly that horses are found dead without premonitory signs, making the term sudden death syndrome applicable to many anthrax cases. Horses that survive long enough to show clinical signs exhibit high fever, severe depression, colic, and hemorrhagic discharge from body orifices before succumbing. The acute nature and high mortality make anthrax one of the most feared infectious diseases of horses.
Treatability of anthrax depends entirely on how early in the disease course treatment begins. Horses treated with high-dose antibiotics before significant toxin accumulation may survive, though the window for effective intervention is extremely narrow. Once clinical signs are advanced, treatment is usually futile as the damage from bacterial toxins cannot be reversed. Prevention through vaccination is the most effective management strategy in endemic areas. Anthrax is a reportable disease in most jurisdictions, and any suspected cases must be immediately reported to veterinary authorities due to public health implications and the need for environmental decontamination.
