This opportunistic parasite primarily targets stressed, weakened, or immunocompromised fish, invading through the skin and quickly penetrating deep into muscle tissue and internal organs. This devastating parasite affects all marine fish species but poses particular threats to certain groups of aquarium inhabitants. Dragonets, mandarins, and other specialized feeders that often arrive in weakened condition from collection stress are frequently victims. The impact of Uronema marinum on affected fish is severe, rapid, and often irreversible by the time symptoms become obvious. The parasite does not merely attach to the skin surface like many external parasites but actively burrows into the flesh, consuming muscle tissue and creating characteristic hemorrhagic lesions. From these initial invasion sites, the ciliates enter the bloodstream and spread to internal organs including the brain, causing neurological symptoms, organ failure, and death. The speed of progression from initial infection to mortality can be measured in days or even hours in severe cases.

The prognosis ranges from guarded for early-stage infections to grave for advanced cases, emphasizing that prevention through proper quarantine, optimal water quality, and stress reduction offers far better outcomes than attempting to treat established infections.
