Skin ulcers can affect virtually any freshwater fish species, though they are particularly common in goldfish, koi, and other pond fish where environmental conditions may fluctuate seasonally. Cichlids, bettas, and various tropical community fish also frequently develop ulcers, particularly following injury or in tanks with suboptimal water quality. The bacteria most commonly responsible include Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas salmonicida, Pseudomonas species, and various other opportunistic gram-negative organisms that take advantage of compromised skin defenses.

Open sores provide direct access for pathogens to enter the body, potentially leading to systemic infection and septicemia. Fish with ulcers must expend significant energy fighting infection and repairing tissue, often resulting in weight loss and decreased immune capacity. Large ulcers may affect swimming ability if located on fins or body areas involved in locomotion. The chronic stress of dealing with painful wounds further compromises overall health and resistance to other diseases.
Skin ulcers are treatable when addressed promptly with appropriate antibacterial medications and supportive care, though the prognosis depends heavily on ulcer depth, extent, and duration before treatment begins. Early intervention when ulcers are small and shallow yields the best outcomes, with most fish recovering completely. Deep ulcers that have reached muscle tissue or those present for extended periods before treatment face more guarded prognosis and may result in permanent scarring or disfigurement even with successful treatment.
