Caused by Cyprinid Herpesvirus 3 (CyHV-3), this devastating pathogen has emerged as one of the most significant threats to ornamental koi collections and commercial carp aquaculture worldwide. Since its initial identification in the late 1990s, KHV has spread globally through the international trade in ornamental fish, causing catastrophic losses in both private collections and public aquaria. The disease is notifiable in many countries due to its severe economic and ecological implications.
KHVD affects exclusively common carp and its ornamental variety, koi, making these fish uniquely vulnerable among aquarium and pond species. The disease does not affect goldfish, other cyprinids, or unrelated fish species, though these fish can potentially serve as mechanical vectors carrying the virus on their surfaces. Prevalence of KHV varies significantly by region, with the virus now established on every continent where koi are kept. Some geographical areas have experienced repeated outbreaks while others remain relatively unaffected due to strict import controls and biosecurity measures.
The impact of KHV on affected fish and collections can be catastrophic, with mortality rates often reaching 80 to 100 percent in naive populations during acute outbreaks. The virus primarily targets gill tissue, causing severe respiratory compromise, while also affecting the skin, kidneys, and other organs.
