Dropsy can affect virtually any freshwater aquarium fish species, though certain fish appear more susceptible due to genetic factors, stress vulnerabilities, or husbandry challenges associated with their care requirements. Bettas rank among the most commonly affected fish due to their popularity, frequent housing in suboptimal conditions, and potential genetic vulnerabilities from extensive selective breeding. Goldfish and koi frequently develop dropsy, often in response to water quality problems or internal bacterial infections. Cichlids, particularly those subjected to aggression stress or inappropriate water conditions, show notable susceptibility. While less commonly reported, marine fish can also develop similar fluid accumulation conditions, though the term dropsy is primarily associated with freshwater species.
The impact of dropsy on affected fish is severe, with the condition representing advanced organ failure that has progressed to a point where the body can no longer maintain normal fluid balance. By the time visible swelling and pine-coning become apparent, significant internal damage has typically already occurred, making dropsy one of the most challenging conditions to treat successfully. Fish experiencing dropsy suffer compromised breathing due to fluid pressure on internal organs, difficulty swimming and maintaining position, complete or near-complete appetite loss, and general systemic distress.
