Cloudy eye can affect virtually any fish species, though it appears most commonly in fish kept under suboptimal conditions or those that have experienced recent stress or physical trauma. The condition may affect one eye or both, with unilateral presentation often suggesting physical injury while bilateral cases typically indicate environmental problems affecting the entire fish. The prevalence varies considerably between aquariums, with well-maintained tanks rarely experiencing cases while poorly maintained systems may see frequent occurrences.
The impact of cloudy eye on fish health is generally moderate and often reversible, particularly when caught early and treated appropriately. The affected eye may have reduced visual acuity, but fish can often compensate using their other eye and non-visual senses. However, untreated cloudy eye can progress to more serious complications including corneal ulceration, secondary infection, and permanent scarring that impairs vision long-term.
