Fin biting, also known as tail biting or self-mutilation, is a behavioral condition in which betta fish deliberately bite and damage their own fins. This distressing behavior most commonly affects the caudal fin, though bettas may also target dorsal, anal, and ventral fins. The resulting damage ranges from minor tears and chunks missing from fin edges to severe destruction that reduces elaborate finnage to ragged remnants.
