This condition is caused by gram-negative bacteria belonging to the Aeromonas genus, with Aeromonas hydrophila being the most frequently identified pathogen responsible for infections in ornamental fish. The bacteria are ubiquitous in freshwater environments and are considered opportunistic pathogens, meaning they typically cause disease only when fish immune systems become compromised due to stress, poor water quality, or other predisposing factors.
Aeromonas infections can affect virtually any freshwater fish species, though certain fish appear more susceptible than others. Goldfish and koi are particularly prone to developing severe infections, especially in pond environments where seasonal temperature fluctuations occur. Cichlids, livebearers, and other tropical community fish also commonly develop this condition when maintained in suboptimal conditions.
