Water hemlock toxicity represents one of the most severe and rapidly fatal plant poisonings affecting livestock in North America, with death frequently occurring within hours of plant consumption. Plants of the Cicuta genus, particularly Cicuta douglasii in western regions and Cicuta maculata in eastern and central areas, contain cicutoxin, an extremely potent convulsant toxin concentrated in the roots and root crown. This plant has earned the distinction of being considered the most violently toxic plant native to North America, with even small amounts of the tubers capable of killing full-grown cattle.
All livestock species are susceptible to water hemlock toxicity, though cattle account for most reported poisoning cases due to the plant's preference for the same moist, low-lying areas where cattle often graze. The danger is particularly acute in early spring when the roots are exposed by flooding, erosion, or animals pulling plants from soft wet soil. Hungry animals emerging from winter with depleted body condition may consume the fleshy, seemingly palatable tubers without recognizing their extreme toxicity, leading to tragic losses that can affect multiple animals simultaneously.
The economic and emotional impact of water hemlock poisoning is devastating for producers who experience outbreaks. The rapid progression from consumption to death often means animals are found already deceased or in terminal convulsive states where treatment is futile. Multiple animal losses may occur when a group encounters exposed rootstocks, and the sudden, violent nature of deaths is traumatic for both the animals and the people who witness or discover them. The loss of breeding stock, pregnant animals, or high-value individuals compounds the financial toll.
