Vagal indigestion, also known as Hoflund syndrome, represents a complex group of forestomach motility disorders in cattle caused by dysfunction of the vagus nerve. This cranial nerve provides parasympathetic innervation to the forestomachs and abomasum, controlling the coordinated contractions necessary for normal digestion and passage of ingesta through the gastrointestinal tract. When vagal function is compromised by inflammation, physical damage, or infiltration, the result is a progressive failure of forestomach motility that leads to chronic indigestion, rumen distension, and declining body condition.
The condition affects cattle of all ages but is most commonly diagnosed in adult dairy cattle, likely reflecting both their longer productive lifespan and the increased diagnostic attention they receive compared to beef cattle. Vagal indigestion develops secondary to various primary conditions that affect vagal nerve function, with hardware disease being the most frequently identified underlying cause. The syndrome may also develop following abdominal surgery, traumatic reticuloperitonitis, liver abscesses, or any inflammatory or neoplastic process affecting the ventral thorax or cranial abdomen where the vagus nerve branches travel.
The economic and welfare impact of vagal indigestion is substantial because affected animals experience progressive weight loss, declining production, and chronic discomfort that typically does not resolve without addressing the underlying cause. Many cases prove refractory to treatment, resulting in economic losses through prolonged non-productive periods followed by culling or death. The insidious onset of vagal indigestion means that significant damage to vagal function may occur before clinical signs become obvious, limiting treatment success. Affected cattle experience ongoing digestive dysfunction that reduces quality of life even when the condition is manageable.
Early detection offers the best opportunity for successful treatment, though the gradual onset of vagal indigestion often delays recognition until the condition is advanced. Understanding the various presentations of vagal indigestion and their associated underlying causes enables more targeted diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. While some cases respond well to treatment of the primary condition, others require surgical intervention or prove untreatable. Prognosis varies widely depending on the type, duration, and underlying cause of vagal dysfunction, making accurate diagnosis essential for informed treatment decisions and economic planning.
