This condition primarily affects dairy cattle, with particular prevalence in high-producing breeds that develop large, pendulous udders with deep clefts. Holstein and Jersey cattle are most commonly affected due to their udder conformation and intensive selection for milk production. The condition occurs worldwide in dairy operations of all sizes, with prevalence estimates ranging from five to twenty percent of cows in affected herds. Beef cattle, sheep, and goats can also develop similar dermatitis conditions in skin fold areas, though the incidence is considerably lower due to smaller udder size and different management systems.
