Tibial Dyschondroplasia occurs worldwide wherever intensive poultry production systems raise fast-growing meat-type birds. The condition is most prevalent in commercial broiler chickens during their rapid growth phase, typically becoming evident between two and six weeks of age. Turkeys raised for meat production are also commonly affected. The incidence of TD varies considerably depending on genetic line, nutrition, and management factors, but studies have reported lesion prevalence ranging from 10% to over 50% in commercial broiler flocks. While many birds with TD lesions remain subclinical, severely affected individuals develop obvious lameness that compromises their welfare and economic value.
The economic and welfare impacts of Tibial Dyschondroplasia are substantial for the modern poultry industry. Affected birds may become lame and unable to access feed and water adequately, resulting in reduced growth rates and poor feed conversion efficiency. Severe cases may require culling, representing direct losses to producers. Carcass quality can be compromised if leg abnormalities result in downgrading or condemnation at processing. Beyond economics, the welfare implications of TD are significant, as birds with painful leg conditions experience reduced quality of life and may suffer from complications including skin lesions from contact with litter and secondary infections.
While Tibial Dyschondroplasia cannot be completely eliminated in modern broiler production, the condition is highly manageable through integrated approaches combining genetic selection, nutritional optimization, and appropriate husbandry practices. Early detection through flock monitoring allows timely intervention to minimize impacts on affected birds. Veterinary involvement is essential for developing comprehensive skeletal health programs that address TD alongside other leg weakness syndromes common in fast-growing poultry.
