The disease represents one of the most economically devastating conditions affecting cattle populations in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, with particular impact in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and parts of southern Europe. The causative organisms are transmitted exclusively through the bite of infected tick vectors, making this disease intimately connected to regional tick populations and environmental conditions that favor tick survival and reproduction.
Several species of Theileria cause disease in cattle, with the most significant being Theileria parva, which causes East Coast Fever primarily in eastern, central, and southern Africa, and Theileria annulata, responsible for tropical or Mediterranean theileriosis across North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Other species including Theileria orientalis have emerged as concerns in previously unaffected regions including Australia and New Zealand. Each species varies in virulence, clinical presentation, and geographic distribution, though all share the characteristic of being transmitted by ticks and causing destruction of blood cells and lymphoid tissue.
The economic impact of theileriosis on cattle production systems cannot be overstated, with estimated annual losses exceeding one billion dollars globally through direct mortality, reduced productivity, treatment costs, and restrictions on cattle movement and trade. In endemic areas, the disease can cause mortality rates exceeding ninety percent in susceptible cattle populations, particularly affecting improved breeds imported from temperate regions where the disease does not occur. Beyond direct losses, theileriosis significantly limits the genetic improvement of cattle herds in affected regions, as high-producing European breeds suffer much higher mortality than indigenous cattle with natural resistance.
Early detection and prompt treatment are absolutely critical for successful outcomes in theileriosis cases, as the disease can progress rapidly from initial infection to fatal outcome within days to weeks depending on the Theileria species involved. Treatment is most effective when initiated before extensive destruction of lymphoid tissue and red blood cells has occurred, emphasizing the importance of regular monitoring, tick control programs, and immediate veterinary intervention when clinical signs first appear.
